Psychology Online Masters - Why to Go For a Graduate Degree in Psychology

Psychology Online Masters

You might be interested in psychology but are wondering why to go for a graduate degree in psychology. Once you have your bachelor's degree in hand the excitement of the diploma can entice you to quit your schooling and begin working in the field, but there are multiple rationales for going back. Although it is always a fine idea to get some experience in the field after getting a bachelor's degree, you will really be held back if you never attain graduate degree status in this field. Following are some reasons why.

The fact of the matter is that without a graduate degree you will never be able to hold any of the top positions in this field. You may find work as an assistant, caseworker or other types of entry-level positions, and these can be satisfying for a while, but if you want to work as a counselor or director you need at least a master's degree. With a master's and/or doctoral degree you may be able to work as a clinician, counselor, social worker or in various types of industrial/ organizational psychologist positions such as school counselor or corporate psychologist. Some of these jobs, such as clinicians and directors of social work programs also typically require a PhD.

There are so many things you can't do without graduate degrees, which is perhaps the most important factor to consider. You can't assess patients or direct others in very much capacity; you can't teach at colleges or universities, and you can't reach positions of respect and authority in the field that allows you to publish academic papers. These are all good reasons why to go for a graduate degree in psychology.

Luckily there are many different options if you decide to pursue graduate study in the psychology field. You can study at a traditional university or one that offers flexible schedules and satellite campuses, or you can even complete most of your degree online with additional hands on training. There's no good reason not to aspire to a graduate degree once you have finished a bachelor's in psychology.

Institutions offering quality Psychology Programs include University of Phoenix, Argosy University, South University, Brown Mackie College and Hesser College.

1. Flexibility - The ability to schedule classes around your day to day life is easily the main reason why most people choose to earn their graduate degrees online. This enables those who cannot leave their neighborhoods, for reasons such as ailments or jobs, to study in schools that would otherwise be out of their reach.

3. Wide variety to choose from - There are plenty of accredited online universities and colleges offering graduate studies virtually. This means you a wide variety of schools to from. More importantly, you have the ability to choose a college based on the programs offered rather than proximity. Online Masters Psychology - Getting an Online Masters Degree in Psychology

Online Masters Psychology

When I was a psychology major in college I had big dreams of getting my Masters and PhD and eventually opening my own practice. It is now three kids later and I am ready to begin studying to get an Online Psychology Masters Degree. Somehow that goal got away from me but now with colleges and universities offering online degree programs I am back in the game and ready to go after my Psychology Masters. Before I did not have the option of earning a degree online but things have changed.

I have found that there are numerous distance learning Psychology Masters Degree programs available and I want to be certain that the one I choose is accredited and well respected. People used to think going to school online was just a waste of time and that no one would ever get hired with an online degree but now many well respected colleges and universities are offering an online degree option because they realize the benefit of having students study from home. Distance learning is really making a name for itself.

If I go to school full time I can earn my Masters Degree in Psychology in approximately 2 years. If I only work on it part time it will take me a bit longer. There will most likely be some portion of the course work that will require me to work in a clinical setting. Because I am aware of the fact that online degrees are available I am quite sure that there is a way to work that out when the time comes. So far the research that I have done on schools with online programs impresses me. There are even ivy league schools with distance learning programs.

Part of deciding which school to attend for my Online Psychology Masters Degree also has a lot to do with the program itself. I want my program to focus on Child Psychology so the course selection will have to offer numerous classes with that concentration. It is important for anyone considering an online program to be sure that the course selection meets their needs and goals. The education itself is equally as important as the degree. This is especially true when it comes to the field of Psychology. My Master's is going to give me all of the knowledge that I need to move on to my Doctorate,

Masters Psychology Online - Sports Psychology Masters Program and Job Options

Masters Psychology Online

Sports psychology is a growing field. A general definition of sports psychology would be learning to use the brain to accomplish maximum sporting performance. There are several common tools used in sports psychology, and as more is learned about the way that people respond to different tools, they will continue to change and develop accordingly. Much of the information learned about sports psychology is through academic learning, and several schools offer a sports psychology masters program.

Goal setting is one of the most important tools used in sports psychology. It is the process of setting an ideal for what you would like the future to be, and then determining ways to make that ideal a reality. By setting goals that are clearly defined you are able to tell more quickly how well you are doing in achieving those goals. Measuring your successes becomes easier when you set goals, and it provides motivation when those goals are either met or not.

A second tool used for sports psychology is imagery. Imagery is basically training with your mind. Using imagination is the basis for imagery, and can boost performance in sports by allowing you to practice when injured, pre-experience the achievement of goals, and mentally prepare for an athletic event and anything that might go wrong, without having to actually experience it physically.

Focus and flow, or how to achieve perfect concentration is the third tool used in sports psychology. In order to achieve what they call "flow" there are several factors which need to be in place. Some of those factors are the ability to perceive that your skills are good enough for the task you are looking to do, your competition is not too easy and therefore you do not become bored with it, you are in a relaxed environment, however, you are very alert, and you are not easily distracted. Being able to handle stress, avoid distraction and being fully focused on the task at hand are all very important. Focus and flow are at the very heart of sports psychology.

There are many different types of jobs which are available in sports psychology. Speaking to someone in your area, or researching online the different paths you might take can be very helpful in determining whether sports psychology is a career you might wish to pursue.

Certainly a sports psychology masters degree program, or a PhD program benefit in being able to find a job in this field, and working with any professional sports teams is certainly a competitive field. The rewards of working with a team, and becoming a part of that team are certainly many, and this is part of what drives people to become involved in a job in sports psychology. Counseling Psychology Online

Do you like being self employed, studying to human mind, working with people and solving their problems? If so, a career as a psychologist may be for you. However, psychology is such a broad field how should you decide what to focus on?

A general degree in psychology will allow you to study the human mind and human behavior. However, a specific focus allows psychologists to specialize in a number of different areas within the psychology field. Psychologists apply their knowledge to a wide range of areas such as health and human services, management, education, law and sports.

Most common specializations include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, education psychology, school psychology, sport psychology, criminal psychology and child psychology. A far less known specialization is transpersonal psychology. This area of psychology presents a number of challenges and may be an interesting and very rewarding career.

Transpersonal psychology degree programs integrate psychological concepts, theories and methods with spiritual disciplines. This type of degree program will allow you to study spiritual experiences, mystical states of consciousness, rituals as well as states such as psychosis and depression. These programs cover the full range of human experiences, from abnormal behavior to normal and spiritually driven actions.

Transpersonal experiences go beyond the limitations of time and space. As a result, transpersonal psychology dives deep into consciousness studies, spiritual inquiry, the body-mind relationship and transformations.

Transpersonal Psychology Degree Programs

Degree programs in transpersonal psychology focus on developing an understanding in the background and tradition of transpersonal psychology and its development and evolution.

Courses covered by these degree programs are broad and varied. They include topics such as counseling theories, strategies and skills, personality theories, contemporary consciousness teachings, theories and practice of meditation, eastern and western strategies for transformation, cross-cultural counseling, and legal issues in counseling. Common elective courses include art and spirituality, conscious living, conscious relationships, death and dying, grief and loss, ecopsychology as well as hypnotherapy, human sexuality and gestalt therapy.

Careers in Transpersonal Psychology

With this degree you could work in academics, focusing on teaching, research or both. You could also work as a part-time faculty member as well as perform counseling and advisor work. Graduates of transpersonal psychology programs run community healing programs, staffing in hospice facilities, provide communication training to schools and business as well as higher education administration and business coaching.

Online Clinical Psychology Programs - Clinical Psychology

Online Clinical Psychology Programs

Clinical psychology is aimed at understanding and studying human and animal behavior. Clinical psychologists evaluate mental health problems and conduct and use scientific research to understand them. They also develop, provide, and assess psychological care and interventions (psychotherapy). In America, clinical psychologists are normally required to hold a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. and often have postgraduate work experience.

American psychologist Lightner Witmer (1867-1956) used the term clinical psychology for the first time in a paper in 1907. He particularly defined it as the study of individuals, by examination or experimentation, with the objective of promoting change. The American Psychological Association provides a more contemporary definition of the term and defines it as the field that combines science, theory, and practice to comprehend and alleviate maladjustment and disability as well as to promote human adaptation, adjustment, and personal development.

Clinical psychology developed as a result of a need for supplementary clinicians to treat mental health problems. It also developed partly as psychological science advanced to the stage where the fruits of psychological research could be effectively applied in a clinical setting.

The field of clinical psychology generally identifies three major perspectives of practice. They are psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and humanistic. However, there does exist a growing debate regarding the inclusion of the transpersonal perspective as well.

The psychodynamic standpoint developed out of the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) formed from the two branches of cognitive psychology and behaviorism. Humanistic psychology came into being in the 1950s. This was largely a reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis, mainly due to the person-centered therapy of Carl Rogers. As such, it is often referred to as Rogerian Therapy. It is often argued that humanistic psychology is more of an outlook than a set of techniques.

Clinical psychology pays attention to the intellectual, emotional, genetic, psychological, and social characteristics of human functioning across the life span at all socioeconomic levels.

Online Child Psychology Degree - Understand Your Child With Child Psychology

Online Child Psychology Degree

Having trouble communicating with your kid? Can't understand what he or she is trying to tell you? Your best option and certainly one of the most effective would be to allow him to interact with a child psychologist who has been trained to understand kiddie talk and the kiddie mind.

Often, parents reject the idea of sending their kids in to "see a shrink", however the act does not have to be a shameful one. More often than not, children who are taken in to see a shrink interact with the shrink in the presence of a parent. It's almost like an informal visit to see 'mommy or daddy's friend'.

Most first time parents are at a loss when it comes to dealing with the child. After all, not all of us are programmed to be parents. A child psychologist can be viewed as a general physician, the only difference being that the psychologist tried to understand the mind and its motivations.

Children are not reared in isolation! There are several factors that determine the development of the child. In the same way that we cannot view the millions of microbes that surround us without a telescope, similarly, without the expert gaze of a child psychologist, we cannot know how the child is affected by the world and environment that it has come to inhabit.

Child psychology delves into how the child is influenced by where he or she is born, the people who surround him or her, the cultural codes it constantly imbibes through interaction with family members and society. It takes into account how the child is affected by how rich or poor his family is, whether there are other siblings, the relationship of the parents and in turn their relationships with their loved ones.

Colleges and universities throughout the country this year began providing students new educational opportunities through additional degree programs. While many of the added programs came in the form of bachelors degrees, colleges and universities also introduced combined degree programs and announced articulation agreements. Through the articulation agreements, students who earn a bachelor at one college or university would be able to save money when moving on to a masters degree at another institution. With the combined degree programs, students earn credits toward a masters degree while working on their bachelor degree. At least one institution announced the addition of an accelerated bachelors degree program that can also save students time and money. The new degree programs include:

Ashford University: This Clinton, Iowa-based institution this fall announced new bachelors degrees in business leadership, adult development, military studies and health marketing and communication. The health marketing and communication and the adult development and military studies programs are online degree programs. Courses for four year degree in business leadership are taught online and on campus, according to the institution. Ashford University also has added two specializations to its masters degree in education. These latest additions, reading literacy and library and media, bring the number of masters degree in education specializations to 14.

Bellevue University: This Belleview, Neb.-based institution in June announced a new bachelors degree in early childhood program management. The bachelors degree program is accelerated and provides information that it says is relevant to early child care and education. According to the Bellevue University announcement, this degree is intended for administrators, licensing agency staff members, childcare providers and those who have graduated from early childhood associate degree programs at community colleges.

Benedictine University: This Lisle, Ill.-based institution in July announced new bachelors degrees in criminal justice and graphic arts and design. The programs began with the fall 2010 semester. Where the four year degree in graphic arts and design familiarizes students with different approaches to design and teachers them how to resolve issues regarding aesthetic, technical and conceptual problems, the degree in criminal justice teaches critical thinking research, problem solving and other skills, according to a Benedictine University announcement. Students in the graphic arts and design program also gain experience and are able to network through internships.

Brandman University: This Irvine, Calif., institution in May announced that it was adding a new bachelors degree in business administration as well as a masters degree in business administration. The new degree programs are designed to prepare students for entrepreneurship, sustainability, leadership and more in a global economy, according to a Brandman University announcement. They were expected to be available at Brandman University campuses throughout California and Washington State as of the fall 2010 semester.

Brown College: This Mendota Heights, Minn.-based institution, through an agreement with Colorado Technical University, allows students who receive a bachelors degree in criminal justice from Brown College to move into a masters degree program in management with a criminal justice concentration at Colorado Technical University Online. Students who take advantage of the graduate education offering are eligible to save money through offerings such as application fee waivers that are a part of the agreement, according to an announcement from Brown College.

Capella University: This online institution since summer 2010 has added more than 11 new programs, including a combined bachelors degree in business with a healthcare management specialization and a master of health administration; a combined bachelors and masters degree in public safety. A combined bachelors in public safety and masters in public administration; a combined bachelor in psychology with a master in education; a combined bachelors degree in public administration with a masters degree in public administration option; and a master's degree in public administration and in the public safety joint program. Capella University also has added a reading and literacy specialization to its doctor of education degree. In October, Capella University announced that it had established online certificate programs in play therapy and interdisciplinary forensics, as well as a family psychology concentration option with its masters degree in psychology with a general psychology specialization.

Students have a variety of scholarship opportunities when it comes to finding money to help pay for bachelors degree programs and more at colleges and universities. The US Departments of Education and Labor, along with the non-profit College Board, and websites such as scholarships.com and fastweb.org allow students to search for scholarships. Colleges and universities also provide scholarships for students who plan to study with them.

Most of these program offerings are available as a distance bachelor degree as more and more college and universities take advantage of growing technologies. These courses online follow the same rigorous program standards as their traditional counterparts and are recognized by employers as equivalent.
