Psychology Doctorate Degrees - Psychology Engages The Mind Of The Professional And The Patient

Psychology Doctorate Degrees

There are a number of different types of psychologists. Still, the one most people think of is actually the clinical psychologist. The mass populace can't be blamed for this; they are the most common practitioners in the field.

That doesn't mean there still aren't a lot of misconceptions about psychology. First of all, it is a science. For instance, it works off of the principles of testing for certain results, and then repeating those tests to see if one gets the same results. The science is a part of the healthcare field, concentrating on mental illnesses instead of physical. Most importantly, modern psychology is well over a century old, and to practice it a psychologist must meet a number of highly rigorous standards.

As defined by its main professional organization, the American Psychological Association, a clinical psychologist concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. They are trained to help patients through not just severe conditions such as extreme schizophrenia or bipolar disorders, but also to help people who have undergone such milder traumas as divorce, a death in the family or the loss of a job. They have a number of different disciplines they can draw from, ranging anywhere from the teachings of Freud to behaviorists like Skinner.

Those interested in the field, should be strong in such academics as the humanities and life sciences. They should also have very strong communications skills and be a, no kidding, very stable personality. There are an incredible number of good on-campus and online colleges that teach the subject. It is also considered a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career, so is accessible to more than just the standard federal grants such as the Pell.

Undergraduate studies tend to be a general introduction to the basics of health care and the major branches of psychology. Students really only start specializing when they enter graduate school. Clinical psychologists will not only have to decide if they want to focus on fields ranging anywhere from child, geropsychology (older adults) or some other form, but also about how to work with other doctors on potential cures.

Education is not complete until a student gets their Doctorate, either a PhD or in Psychology. They must also eventually be certified by the American Psychology Association to work in many areas. One of the main ways a student gets through this six or more year process is, after getting their Bachelors degree, to find employment at a clinic or hospital and continue their education online.

At present, there are currently slightly over 150,000 practicing clinical psychologists in the U.S. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will be a need for approximately 16,000 more over the next decade, which is about the average for the country. Approximately one third of all practicing clinical psychologists operate their own practice.

Still a very dynamic and growing field, clinical psychology is still evolving and growing. When exploring colleges psychology, you will find that even though it's over a century old, many a psychologist will tell you there is still a lot more to be known. You can explore an introductory course at a college for free and find out if this field, in all its various forms, may be right for you.

General Psychology Degree - What an Accredited Psychology Degree Has Done For Me

General Psychology Degree

I received an accredited psychology degree about eight years ago, and I have to say that it has done a lot for me, and not just in my career field.

My first few years of college, I was not sure exactly what I wanted to be. I really did not have anything that grabbed my interest from the get-go, and I ultimately waited until my junior year, when I absolutely had to declare a major, and chose religion.

A few years passed, and I started thinking more and more about the type of life I would like to lead. Many of my friends told me that I was a good listener and would make a good counselor. I remember always enjoying psychology in college, and one of my favorite professors actually had an accredited psychology degree himself, so I decided to go for one as well.

Besides being integral to the counseling that I do now, my accredited psychology degree has helped me to better understand people in general. In other words, if someone is acting in a peculiar manner or is exhibiting a certain type of behavior, I recognize it for what it is, which is typically some kind of disorder.

Another way that my accredited psychology degree has helped me is with the coping skills I have learned throughout my coursework in terms of dealing with life's more stressful situations. Thanks to a number of great textbooks and lectures, I have been able to curtail negative or destructive behavior and remain a well-adjusted person.

From a more personal standpoint, I have made a number of very close friends because of my accredited psychology degree. Whether it was was through my actual course of study for the degree, or those that I have met since starting to counsel that are colleagues, it has provided a great opportunity for me to meet a number of interesting people.

Finally, I am the sort of person that really likes to help other people. I can imagine nothing better than helping people who may be depressed or have other issues, listening to them and helping them get through whatever is bothering them. My accredited psychology degree has allowed me to do just that, and it is quite fulfilling.

I have always felt that going for my accredited psychology degree was one of the best decisions that I ever made. Besides being able to counsel others and understand the human psyche much better than I ever had before, it has also filled a part of life that seemed to be missing for quite some time. I am happier and feel more complete than I ever have before, and I truly believe that is due in large part to getting my degree.

Having a clinical psychology masters degree will allow me to find some additional job opportunities or perhaps go on to obtain my Doctorate degree in the future. Going to school full time, I should be able to complete the Masters in 2 years or so. Part time of course would take a bit longer. Being able to work on my degree from home and work it around my schedule is better then I could have hoped.

Once I get through my Masters in Clinical Psychology I will have a better focus and get more into counseling like I have always wanted to. It is about time for my psychology degree to start working for me. Clinical Psych has always interested me because I like to try to figure out things. That is part of what this area of psychology is all about. At first I thought very hard about going into child psychology but then I decided that this would be more interesting and that I was better suited for clinical.

Over the course of my Masters Clinical Psychology I will want to work in some sort of clinical setting and it may be required that I do so. Hands on experience is invaluable and having some will help me decide specifically the type of work that I am interested in doing. On paper almost everything looks good but to actually get out there and be "hands on" is going to be the biggest eye opener for me. Going back to school now will be so interesting and I will learn all of the most up to date information regarding clinical psychology. I am so looking forward to getting back to a field that I love and learning as much as I can.

Online Graduate Degree Psychology - Online College Enriches Lives of Senior Citizens

Online Graduate Degree Psychology

Every spring you hear of a senior citizen, often in their 90's, graduating with their first college degree. Some might think it's cute to see a great grandparent in cap and gown. The real truth is one should admire these people who are using their golden years to get everything from associate degrees to masters.

Now here's the great little secret, any senior citizen can do it. If anything, it's been proven to not only enrich their lives, but prolong them. Online colleges are one popular way these "retired" students are going about furthering their education.

Moving from secret to myth, the simple truth is old dogs can learn new tricks. Maybe these elderly students aren't planning to be brain surgeons or rocket scientists, but they are very often supplementing their knowledge in arenas they have always had an interest in.

For instance, one such graduate always appreciated and read her share of literature. Thanks to her new Bachelor's of Arts in Literature, she now has a deeper understanding of the conditions her favorite authors wrote under, what they were trying to do and thus winding up with a greater appreciation of why the work is considered great. Another is a retired engineer who got a degree in history so he could better appreciate the evolution of his profession.

For those who wonder if they can afford getting a degree when they are living on a retiree's income, here's another myth that can be easily shot down. It turns out there is academic financial aid for the elderly. Companies such as Calgon have set up special financial aid programs for people over the age of 35, and this includes senior citizens. Many colleges also offer senior citizens special reduced tuition or audit programs. There are also programs, such as the Janet Rankin Foundation, set up for just this. If that isn't enough, a number of U.S. states offer tuition wavers to people age 62 or older.

As for the online option? One main reason many senior citizens are taking this route is while their minds might still be exceptionally sharp, the wear and tear of over 60 years of living has taken its toll on them physically. As it stands, with traditional desktops and laptops now dropping below $200, they can afford DSL or Wi-Fi hookups and not have to endure commuting. Further, as with all online courses, they can take their classes when they want to, not the other way around.

As for the longevity issue, scientists have long acknowledged that keeping a brain active and stimulated is essential towards living a much longer lifetime. Even if the senior citizen is studying a field that's absolutely obscure, what they are also doing is keeping their minds active and agile, thus adding years to their lives.

So, the next time you look at a newspaper or web article extolling college graduates who just earned associate degrees at an advanced age, look at that person with a bit of admiration and respect. They are actually doing themselves quite a bit of good by going back to school, many with the aid of online college grants just for their age group.

Online Graduate School Psychology - Critical Thinking Skills Help You Get Into Graduate School in Psychology

Online Graduate School Psychology

"Psychology is easy. It's just common sense." How many psychology students have uttered those words only to find out that they had underestimated the field of psychology? Earning a doctorate degree in psychology is certainly not about repeating "common sense," but actually creating new knowledge by extensive use of your critical thinking skills. Not only are these skills engaged in research, but also in writing. While the college experience is supposed to engage these analytical skills, many students leave the university without them.

Solid critical thinking skills is one of the underlying factors that separates those who get into graduate school in psychology from those who do not. Rather than memorizing facts in preparation for an exam, getting a doctorate degree in psychology relies upon creating new knowledge. That is, designing your own research to extend scientific knowledge about human behavior as we know it today.

Whether you realize it or not, critical thinking skills are important to convey in your personal statement. As a matter of fact, your letters of recommendation that accompany your graduate school application package should speak to your ability to think critically. Graduate admissions committees want to know that not only do you have an interest in your area of specialization, but that you have knowledge of the field and specific ideas about where the field needs to go from here. And, yes, all of this is reliant not upon regurgitating facts, but have critical thinking skills. These are one of the factors that many applicants lack that essentially keeps them out of graduate school.

Critical Thinking In Psychology: Separating Sense From Nonsense is one of recommended books you should read if you're interested in bolstering your critical thinking skills before you apply to graduate school. It is technically a textbook that some schools actually require that students purchase for their classes. If you haven't taken many courses that require you to analyze passages, create original research studies, or analyze actual data, then you may benefit from reading this book before you go onto graduate school.

Did you know that less than 10% of applicants get into the graduate school of their choice? Personal statement writing is your chance to stand out from other applicants! Visit Doctorate Degree Psychology for more tips and strategies on how to get into grad school!
