You might find yourself dreading conversations and family gatherings because you know you'll be criticized. Planning ahead for how you'll handle those interactions can help you stay strong. Accept that they're overly critical and keep in mind that their comments may be more reflections of themselves rather than accurate commentary about you. Establish healthy boundaries and be assertive. Speak up and say things like, "I appreciate your concern about my eating habits but I assure you that my physician and I are working on it." If the criticism continues, you may need to offer feedback like, "I enjoy spending time with you but hearing you criticize my parenting is tough." If that doesn't work, you may want to limit the amount of time you spend together in an effort to preserve your mental health.
